Professor Jerzy Merkisz D.Sc., Eng., has worked at Poznan University of Technology since 1971. In 1993 he was appointed the Head of Institute of Combustion Engines and Transport. He still runs and manages the Institute.
His main field of expertise is combustion engines design and operation. In his scientific works he focuses primarily on the environmental issues and emissions. He has published a number of articles devoted to the adverse effects of combustion and exhaust gases as well as devoted to fuel sources and quality. Moreover, he is an expert in transport ecology, on-board diagnostics, road traffic collision recording and intelligent transport systems. He has carried out research on the influence of fuel consumption on the toxic nature of exhaust gases. Currently, he promotes a European project on combustion engines financed by the EU.
Professor Merkisz is a member of the American Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and European Automotive Research Partners Association in Brussels (EARPA). Besides, he is a professor honorary at Ukraine Transport High School. He is an expert appointed at European Road Transport Research Advisory Council in Brussels (ERTRAC). Additionally, professor Merkisz is affiliated with the following institutes and organisations:

  •     BOSMAL Automotive Research & Development Institute Ltd, Bielsko-Biała, Poland
  •     Automotive Transport Institute, Warsaw, Poland
  •     Industrial Automotive Institute, Warsaw, Poland
  •     Railway Vehicles Institute TABOR, Poznan, Poland
  •     Aviation Institute, Warsaw, Poland
  •     123 Comission for Norms and Standardisation of Combustion Engines
  •     Scientific Council at Industrial Automotive Institute
  •     Polish Scientific Society of Combustion Engines, where he is the head of management board

Professor Merkisz was appointed expert on bio-fuels by Nature Conservation Comission at Senate of the Republic of Poland. He was also Polish president's advisor and a reviewer in Transport Department at National Accreditation Comission (the Ministry of Education and Sport). Furthermore, he was a member of the reviewing council at the Accreditation Comission for technical universities and colleages. Professor Merkisz has earned an outstanding position and a high status of an acknowledged scientist for his leadership and collaboration with the automotive industry - he has carried out or supervized over 135 research and has published more than 210 works concerning automotive indusrty advancement. He has promoted 25 Doctors of Science. What is more, he is an author or a co-author of 610 paper and articles including books and monographies on combustion engines and transport ecology. A great deal of his works has been published in international scientific journals. Professor Merkisz has participated in 350 conferences around the world. These are professor Merkisz's main or most recent publications: Particulate Matter Emissions in CI Engines, WPP, Poznań 1997; Cold Start Emissions Investigation at Different Ambient Temperature Conditions, SAE Technical Paper Series, No 980401, Detroit 1998; Ecological Problems with Combustion Engines, WPP, Poznań 1999; Investigation of exhaust emissions from DI diesel engine during cold and warm start, SAE Technical Paper Series, No 2001-01-1260, Detroit 2001; Introducing Standard EOBD in Poland in Light of the Diagnosing Cars in Procedure On-line, The 19th International Battery, Hybrid and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exhibition: The Answer for Clean Mobility, Busan, Korea 2002; Basic proceeding of diagnosis and strategy of decision on OBD II system, 6th International Symposium on Advanced Vehicle Control: Proceedings of AVEC'02, International Conference Center Hiroshima, Japan 2002.
